We’ll meet you at the summit
We might call it the “Lakes Region,” but there is more to us than just our water. Grab your hiking poles and some water (or, better yet, some beer) and meet us while we hike some of our favorite spots in New Hampshire:
1. Mount Major (Alton): The superstar! This moderate 3-4 mile loop scrambles up ledgy slopes to a breezy, rocky summit with jaw-dropping 360° panoramas of the whole lake twinkling below like a giant blue playground. Families love the challenge—think mini rock climbs and epic picnic spots. Pro tip: Hit it for sunset and feel like king or queen of Winnipesaukee.
2. Red Hill (Center Harbor/Moultonborough): Climb this friendly 3.5-mile loop to a historic fire tower for sweeping views of Winni, Squam Lake, and distant White Mountains. Steady but rewarding, it’s less crowded than Major and rewards you with tower-top wow moments. Imagine spotting boats zipping like toy cars—pure magic in fall foliage!
3. Lockes Hill (Gilford): Your easy-breezy neighbor to Major! This gentle 2-mile loop through woods and old quarry offers sweet lake peeks without the sweat. Perfect for kids, pups, or a chill morning wander. Quarry views and wildlife sightings make it feel like a secret forest hideout.
4. Belknap/Gunstock Mountain area (Gilford): Head up trails like the Rowe or carriage roads for open summits and lake vistas. Mix of moderate climbs and ski-area vibes—think wild blueberries in season and picnic tables with million-dollar views. Great for stretching legs and pretending you’re in a postcard.
5. West Rattlesnake (Holderness, nearby Squam views): Short, sweet, and spectacular! Easy 2-mile round-trip via Old Bridle Path pops you onto open ledges gazing over islands and water. Breezy, family-friendly, and that “I’m on top of the world” feeling with minimal effort—ideal for a quick lakeside high-five.
